Quebec homeowners who improve the energy efficiency of their homes are eligible for attractive provincial grant program, and often municipal grants as well. At the moment, the main program is the Quebec government’s Rénoclimat program. Also, there are two new refundable tax credits programs called ÉcoRénov and LogiRénov.

Rénoclimat

The Quebec government is continuing to offer the Rénoclimat program. Most homeowners qualify. You are eligible for this grant if you do or contract your external wall insulation work. The maximum grant awarded to the homeowner amounted to $ 2,440 (100% insulation of the exterior wall area by increasing the insulating value over R-9). The amount depends on the increase in your home’s EnerGuide rating.

In all cases, to qualify for grants you must register before starting work. You must also have two energy evaluations of your home done (before and after renovations).

ÉcoRénov

Since October 2013, the Government of Quebec has created a refundable tax credit to encourage the production of eco-friendly home improvement work. The owners of most homes are eligible. Using SureTouch system for your exterior cladding retrofit will increase the insulation value of your exterior walls by more than R-3,8 (work type A1 according ÉcoRénov program). You can claim this tax credit ÉcoRénov only for 2013 and 2014 taxation years. Moreover, these renovations must be performed by a qualified contractor, under a contract entered into after October 7, 2013 and before 1 November 2014.

The amount of the tax credit corresponds to 20% of the portion of an individual's eligible expenses that exceeds $2,500, up to a maximum tax credit of $10,000 per eligible dwelling.

PS: In addition to this refundable tax credit, you may be eligible for the financial assistance offered in respect of eco-friendly home renovation under the Rénoclimat program run by the Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles.

LogiRénov

Since April 2014, the Quebec government has created a new refundable tax credit to encourage the homeowners to renovate their principal residence, expand it or adapt it to the special needs of a family member. The owners of most homes are eligible. You can claim this tax credit LogiRénov only for 2014 and 2015 taxation years. Moreover, these renovations must be performed by a qualified contractor, under a contract entered into after April 24, 2014 and before July 1, 2015.

The amount of the tax credit corresponds to 20% of the portion of an individual's eligible expenses that exceeds $3,000, up to a maximum tax credit of $2,500 per eligible dwelling.

To qualify for the tax credit, the work done must essentially cover the living space of the home as well as its exterior siding and roofing. What's more, to encourage households to incorporate eco-friendly work into their home renovation projects, all work recognized for the purposes of the EcoRenov tax credit and carried out after that tax credit has expired (that is, work done under a contract entered into after October 31, 2014) will be recognized for the purposes of the LogiRénov tax credit.
